LegalZoom is the company your accountant, your banker, and your brother-in-law have all heard of. That recognition is worth something real. Two decades of advertising built a business people trust with paperwork they find intimidating, the support infrastructure is substantial, and nobody has ever been second-guessed for hiring them. For a first-time owner who wants the safest-sounding option on the list, that is a rational purchase.

$249, Flat, Renewing on Schedule

The registered agent product runs $249 per year. It auto-renews at the same figure, and no first-year reduction turned up in our review. Give them credit for that: there is no teaser here and no step-up waiting in year two. The price quoted is the price that recurs. It is simply the highest flat annual rate among the Alabama services we track.

Alabama does not grade agents on brand equity. Under Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.31 the requirement is an in-state street address where a person can be handed legal papers during business hours, held by someone living in Alabama or by a company authorized to operate here. A mailbox rental does not qualify and neither does an answering service. Both companies clear that bar identically. The $150 annual difference buys recognition, not compliance.

Where the Compliance Marketing Goes Wrong in Alabama

National vendors sell annual report filing packages in all fifty states. In Alabama that package describes a filing that does not exist. LLCs here never had a Secretary of State annual report, and the corporate equivalent, Schedule AL-CAR, disappeared when Act 2024-213 took effect on October 1, 2024. What survives is a Department of Revenue tax return, the Business Privilege Tax, and from the 2024 tax year forward an entity calculating $100 or less in tax owes zero and submits nothing. Before paying anyone for Alabama compliance work, confirm the filing being sold is still real.

What It Takes to Move Off LegalZoom in Alabama

Alabama's exit is one page of paperwork under the heading Change of Registered Agent or Registered Office by Entity. No form number attaches to it, Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.32 is the section that permits it, and the Business Services Division at the Secretary of State charges $100 to record it.

Get the new agent enrolled before you submit anything. The form needs their Alabama street address written on it, and appointing first means the state record moves straight from one valid agent to the next with no interval in between. An entity showing no agent on file is the version of this you do not want.

Then cancel separately. A $249 subscription that auto-renews will keep auto-renewing until you tell LegalZoom to stop, and the Secretary of State has no part in that conversation.
