A Rocket Lawyer Alternative for Alabama Agent Service

No Teaser, No Trapdoor

Start with the part that reflects well on them. Rocket Lawyer asks $125 annually for registered agent service and holds that figure identically across every membership tier they offer. We located no introductory discount, which cuts in their favor: nothing cheap up front means nothing expensive waiting in month thirteen. In a category where teaser rates are close to standard practice, a price that simply is what it is deserves acknowledgment.

The Real Question Is What You Are Buying

Rocket Lawyer is a legal services platform. Document templates, attorney consultations, e-signature, and a document library are the product, and the registered agent service is one room in a fairly large house. If you want the house, the $125 is reasonable and the platform may well justify itself several times over.

If you want an agent, the calculation changes. Alabama's requirement, set out in Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.31, is narrow: an address in this state, on an actual street, with somebody there through the working day to take delivery of legal papers. The agent must either live in Alabama or be a company cleared to do business in it. The statute says nothing about template libraries. It does not ask whether your provider offers attorney consultations. An owner whose only need is the statutory one is paying $125 for the hallway on the way to a room they use once a year, if that.

The $26 annual difference is modest and we will not oversell it. The structural difference is the point: one of these prices includes a platform you may never open.

The Unbundled Version

Filing Alabama's Statement of Change After Rocket Lawyer

Alabama routes this through Business Services at the Secretary of State on a document the state names Change of Registered Agent or Registered Office by Entity. Filed with no form number, and with the authority sitting at Ala. Code § 10A-1-5.32, it costs $100 under the current fee schedule. Submissions travel by mail or by email to miscellaneous.filings@sos.alabama.gov, so a paper trip is optional.

Appoint before you file, always. The form asks for the incoming agent's name and Alabama street address, so the account has to exist before the paperwork can be finished, and taking the steps in that order means there is never a moment when Alabama shows your business with no agent on record. Continuous coverage is not a nice-to-have. An entity with nobody on file can be served without ever knowing it happened.

Then handle the subscription yourself. If your Rocket Lawyer membership carries other services you use, cancelling agent service alone may take a phone call or a support ticket. The state filing has no effect on any of that; it changes the public record and stops there.
